Orthodox Church Serving Dunedin, FL

Orthodox Church Serving Dunedin, FL

Dunedin is a charming Gulf coast town with deep Scottish heritage, a vibrant downtown, and easy access to Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island state parks. About 36,000 people call it home. If you live in Dunedin and are looking for an Orthodox church, St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Church is 14 miles south of you in Pinellas Park, and the trip down is straightforward.

Dunedin itself does not have an Orthodox parish. The closest options for Dunedin residents are our parish to the south, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Clearwater (about six miles south of Dunedin), and St. Catherine Russian Orthodox Mission in Clearwater. Of these three, only St. Michael offers regular Sunday Divine Liturgy in English and Ukrainian.

Drive Time and Route from Dunedin

From downtown Dunedin (near Main Street and Edgewater Drive), the drive to St. Michael takes about 25 to 30 minutes. The most direct route:

  • Continue south on Alternate 19 until it merges with US 19
  • Continue south on US 19 past the Westfield Countryside area and through Largo

  • Turn north on 49th Street
  • Turn east on 102nd Avenue
  • Arrive at 9201 60th St

Drive time varies with traffic. Sunday morning is generally light, so plan for 25 minutes from downtown Dunedin.

There is no toll on this route. Free parking is available on-site at the parish.

Why Dunedin Residents Visit St. Michael

Dunedin is a community that values culture, heritage, and tradition. Many residents who choose Orthodox Christianity are drawn by the depth of liturgical worship and the unbroken connection to the early Church. St. Michael offers that within driving distance.

Bilingual Divine Liturgy. Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox in Clearwater is closer geographically and is a vibrant parish, particularly given its growing population of new young converts. But Holy Trinity celebrates primarily in Greek and English. If your tradition is Ukrainian, or if you are looking for a bilingual experience that includes Slavic chant and Ukrainian liturgical music, our parish is the option to consider.

A welcoming convert pathway. Dunedin has a noticeable population of Americans drawn to Orthodox Christianity through reading, YouTube, and conversation with friends. The conversion wave that has touched parishes across Tampa Bay is touching Dunedin too. If you are a Dunedin resident inquiring about the faith, our first visit guide and becoming Orthodox page walk you through what to expect.

Ukrainian heritage and community. Dunedin has a small but growing Ukrainian community, particularly families who have settled here through the Uniting for Ukraine sponsorship program since 2022. Our parish welcomes Dunedin’s Ukrainian families and is happy to connect them with practical resources and the broader Tampa Bay Ukrainian community.

Other Orthodox Options Near Dunedin

We will be honest about your options:

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Clearwater. Six miles south of Dunedin. Greek tradition, very active parish, strong music ministry, growing convert membership. If you are open to the Greek liturgical experience, Holy Trinity is a fine choice and closer to you than we are.

St. Catherine Russian Orthodox Mission, Clearwater. Mission status, smaller community. Russian Orthodox tradition (ROCOR), services with both English and Slavonic.

Our parish, St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Fourteen miles south of Dunedin. Ukrainian Orthodox tradition, bilingual English and Ukrainian Liturgy, family-feel parish.

If the Greek tradition speaks to you, go to Holy Trinity. If you want Ukrainian Orthodox tradition specifically, or a bilingual English-Ukrainian liturgical home, drive the extra eight miles to St. Michael. The parish you join will be your spiritual home for years. The right fit matters more than the closer parking lot.

Sacraments for Dunedin Families

Dunedin families have come to St. Michael for baptism, Orthodox weddings, and memorial services. All sacraments can be celebrated in English, Ukrainian, or bilingually based on your family’s preference.

For weddings, contact Fr. Stephen at least six months in advance. The Orthodox wedding rite includes the betrothal, the crowning, the common cup, and the procession. It is a moving ceremony that families remember for the rest of their lives.

For baptisms, we recommend reaching out as soon as you decide to baptize your child. The conversation with Fr. Stephen typically covers godparent selection, the date, what to bring, and any catechetical preparation. There is no fee for the sacrament. Donations to the parish are welcome.
